1. Causes of Organic Pollution
The adsorption of some organic substances on the membrane surface can cause membrane flux loss, which can be irreversible in severe cases. Because reverse osmosis membranes are typically hydrophobic and negatively charged, this adsorption process is more likely to occur when the organic substances are hydrophobic or positively charged. Most surfactants have a significant impact on membrane performance. Oils and even some natural organic substances can cause serious fouling of membrane elements.
2. Preventing membrane degradation
In addition to preventing fouling by certain substances in the system feed water, the chemical stability of the membrane material itself to these substances also needs to be considered. Once the microstructure or molecular structure of the membrane is altered due to physical or chemical attack, the membrane performance will experience an irreversible decline. Among the substances that need to be prevented, oxides are the main type of substance that causes damage to composite membranes and must be completely removed during pretreatment.
